Social Inquiry Reports ordered for jewellery thieves
A pair of teenagers yesterday admitted trading in stolen jewellery at a cash-for-gold store.Joshua Usher, 19, pleaded guilty to two counts of receiving stolen goods, while Richai Young, 18, admitted a single count. The Crown however offered no evidence against a third defendant, 19-year-old Travis Lowe, who was discharged from the matter.Magistrates’ Court heard that on November 14, 2012, a Pembroke resident came home to discover the safety catch on her window had been broken and someone had rifled through her dresser and jewellery box.She contacted the police. A search of the home revealed around $11,430 of jewellery and cash had been removed from the house. The following evening another Pembroke resident discovered that a $300 gold ring with an Onyx stone had been stolen from his home.Officers investigating the incidents attended the Bermuda Gold Exchange where they learned that Usher and Young had both traded in jewellery matching the descriptions of some of the stolen items. The court heard that Young provided the store with a US photo ID with his name, and was given $535 for the jewellery.Police subsequently arrested Young on suspicion of burglary, and a search of his home revealed other jewellery items stolen in the first robbery.Young told officers that the jewellery belonged to his girlfriend, and later said he was asked by a person not before the courts to trade in the items for him.Police later learned that the person mentioned by Young was studying in North Carolina, and was not on the Island when the burglary took place.Questioned again, Young admitted lying to police and refused to say who had given him the jewellery.Usher was also arrested and questioned in connection to the offence. He told officers that a friend had given him the jewellery from the first theft, and he found the ring from the second burglary on the road.Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered social inquiry reports be carried out on both defendants, releasing them on bail until they can be sentenced later this month.
