Sub Tuzo gets ball rolling to boost Town title push

Devonshire Colts 0 Championship challengers Dandy Town kept up their title push with three crucial points in a scrappy match with Devonshire Colts at St. John's Field.

But it was not until the very last minute that they could be sure of the victory which keeps them in touch with defending champions Vasco.

Diminutive striker Reggie Tucker eased the worries of clock-watching Dandy Town fans when he put the result beyond doubt just as injury time beckoned.

His right foot tap-in came courtesy of a fine cross and run by man-of-the-match Darron Simons, who timed his run perfectly down the left and beat the offside trap.

The 2-0 win keeps Dandy Town five points behind Vasco -- but they now claim second place on their own, with a three-point cushion over North Village.

Town's title-chasing nerves made for a physical game which featured little thoughtful football but plenty of commitment.

The home side just edged a first half which saw them both guilty of missing a host of chances and unlucky to find Colts' keeper Troy Hall in outstanding form.

But an inspired substitution by coach Mark Trott introduced Seyoum Tuzo into the action after 67 minutes.

And five minutes later he had broken the deadlock with a mis-hit shot which squeezed past Hall in a goalmouth scramble.

Tuzo turned and shot left-footed from six yards, only just getting enough contact on the ball for it to cross the line.

But again Simons had been the provider, crossing from a deep position on the left.

In fact, the Dandy Town striker was the first player to bring the game to life, shooting left-footed from 20 yards after 10 minutes, forcing a brilliant one-handed save by Hall.

The early warning sparked Colts into action and their forward, Aljame Zuill, flicked a neat header inches over the bar eight minutes later.

The game had little pattern but both sides were in the contest and Simons ought to have scored after a surging run from defence put him clear, but his shot went wide.

And some wayward shooting by Colts kept the score at 0-0 going into the break, although Zuill appeared to be forming a useful frontline partnership with Jerome Laws.

Colts came closest during a spell of sustained pressure towards the end of the first half, when they forced four successive corners.

But bizarrely, their best chance was when Tito Smith scuffed one of his flag-kicks on the right.

The ball fell straight to Romond Douglas who backheeled towards goal, only to see it bounce back off the post to be cleared for another corner.

Colts were forced into more of a rearguard action in the second half, with Dandy Town forcing the pace and picking up the tempo.

But their failure to convert a series of chances -- including one brilliant double-save by Hall to deny Simons after 79 minutes -- kept their followers holding their breaths right until that last-gasp winner.
