It?s official: Sluggo and Stars part company
Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock and Western Stars have officially parted company.
However, the all-rounder?s cricket season and future are in limbo as he awaits word from Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) regarding his request that they bend their transfer regulations and allow him to complete an intended move to Southampton Rangers.
?I?m happy that it?s concluded but basically I have to see what decision they (BCB) make as far as my release is concerned,? said the 33-year-old following a statement from Western Stars yesterday indicating Leverock was free to leave the city club.
At the crux of the veteran?s concern is that if he is without a club this season his eligibility for international and Cup Match selection would be in jeopardy.
?If I?m not playing cricket then it would be hard for me to represent the country and play Cup Match,? he noted candidly.
Leverock said he was hopeful of playing this year and expected a call back from the Board on the matter.
Meanwhile, in a letter released to Leverock, the BCB and (see Sports Mailbox, Page 21), Western Stars president Calvin Blankendal stressed the St. John?s Road organisation had never sought to block Leverock?s transfer. In fact, he noted the player?s released was authorised as soon as it was requested.
Confusion, however, ensued when an administrative error on Rangers? part caused his transfer to be denied by the BCB. The latter informed Leverock and Stars that he would have to remain at Stars for the 2004 season given the situation.
While a way seemed to be being made for Leverock?s return to Stars the player told the club on Tuesday that he no longer wished to represent them and definitely wanted to leave.
Though he declined further comment on his desire ? terming the reasons ?personal? ? other sources have indicated that some Stars players were against Leverock coming back.
