Long-serving executive member of Warwick Workmen's Club George Byron has passed away. He was 67.

Byron was not only a stalwart at the club, but he was also a former representative of both the Somers Isle Cricket League and the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control.

Former BCBC president El James, himself a long-time member of Warwick Workmen's Club, had fond memories of Byron who helped so many young people at the club over the years.

"George has probably been involved with the club all of his life, from a young teenager. He has played an influential role in the lives of so many people at the club, there is no doubt that he has been a sobering influence to many, including myself,'' said James.

"I never really wanted to get involved in Cup Match and he was the one who went and paid my dues at Somerset CC when I was 28. He told me that he just wanted to see me go and try it.''

While perhaps better known for playing a crucial administrative role with Warwick over the years, Byron was also a prominent player during his days having excelled in both soccer and cricket with the club.

James recalls him making quite an impact and was always highly regarded for the competitiveness that he displayed on and off the field of play.

"He touched a lot of young people and he has bee a real role model. He was out there building at en early age. He was one who had worked hard from his mid teens and always urged and inspired others to strive hard to achieve something in life for themselves rather than ask for help," said James.

"I could be wrong but I would guess that he was probably the longest serving executive member that Warwick club have ever had. It's so sad to lose an individual like that even though he had been battling for some time."
