Patrick quits Jets as move turns sour

David Patrick's move to England has turned sour with the player quitting the British Basketball League's Chester Jets after less than a season.

Patrick left the Canberra Cannons of the Australian National Basketball League in October to join the all-conquering Jets - the reigning BBL champions, Northern Conference winners, National Cup holders and BBL Trophy victors.

The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a season long deal after turning down the opportunity to play in France and Poland.

Patrick played in a total of eight games for the Jets - five League, two Trophy and one Cup match - for a total of 91 minutes, scoring 14 points in the process. "David felt he was not getting enough court time," said coach Robbie Peers.

"We sat down and talked it over a couple of weeks ago and I explained that I couldn't promise him anything.

"He accepted that but felt he needed to move on and asked to be released.

"I don't blame him at all and the club wishes him all the best for the future."

Meanwhile, Bermuda's other British-based basketball star, Sullivan Phillips, saw his coach sent off after he protested a foul call against the Island player.

Coach Tony Garbelotto was left in a rage by referee Noel Malone after the Birmingham Bullets blew the chance of an upset victory at the Brighton Bears on Sunday.

Bullets went down 76-71 as the game was settled from the foul-line with 4.8 seconds left after Phillips was called for an unsportsmanlike foul and Garbelotto stormed onto the court in protest.

He was ejected and Ralph Blalock sank three shots from the stripe to take Brighton to the top of the BBL.

Garbelotto told the Birmingham Evening Mail: "We had to foul them and we did at mid-court but the referees missed it. Eventually Sullivan fouled under the basket and it was called unsportsmanlike.

"I went on court and shouted at the referees because I was so mad at the decision and got thrown out.

"It was ridiculous, we were legitimately trying to stop the clock all that time but we got killed by the officials."

It was a disappointing end to the weekend after Bullets moved off the bottom of the table by beating the Leicester Riders 91-88 at home on Saturday.
