Shadow Cabinet `far superior' says Wade
Shadow Cabinet yesterday.
"Man for man, woman for woman we are far superior to Government,'' he declared.
His new blood will grapple with the key areas of race, youth, environment, and labour relations.
Among them is Ms Renee Webb, Bermuda's first Shadow Minister of Human Affairs and Information.
She will lock horns with Government counterpart Mr. Jerome Dill over the election hot potato -- race relations.
"She will be quite excellent, and hopefully we will be able to discuss race on an even playing field without being accused of being racists,'' said Mr.
Wade.
Dr. Ewart Brown is Shadow Minister of Youth, Sport and Recreation, while Rev.
Trevor Woolridge handles the Environment portfolio.
New Shadow Labour and Home Affairs Minister is Mr. Alex Scott and Mr. Jimmy Williams takes on Community Affairs and Culture.
Two party veterans, Mr. Stanley Morton and Mr. Walter Lister, were appointed special assistants to Mr. Wade -- new positions.
Mr. Morton will handle "non-Ministries'', including the Attorney General's Chambers and foreign affairs, such as the US Base issue.
Mr. Lister will have responsibility for Management and Technology -- relieving the burden on Mr. Wade.
"I wanted to have senior people right next to me, to pick up and do this job,'' Mr. Wade explained.
And, in another fresh move, he declared Mr. Reginald Burrows House Leader of the Opposition.
The new post mirrored that in the House of Commons in England, said Mr. Wade.
Under it, Mr. Burrows would help keep Opposition MPs informed about Government legislative programmes, he added.
"I trust Government will follow our lead,'' challenged Mr. Wade.
Yesterday's announcements came at a Press conference at the Progressive Labour Party's Alaska Hall headquarters.
Mr. Wade confirmed himself as party leader, and Shadow Minister of Management and Technology.
Four MPs stay with their current portfolios.
They are Mr. Eugene Cox, Finance; Mr. David Allen, Tourism; Mr. Nelson Bascome, Health, Social Services and Housing; and Ms Jennifer Smith, Education.
Mr. Stanley Lowe remains as the Opposition Whip.
Praise was heaped on the five party stalwarts by Mr. Wade, who said they had proved their Parliamentary prowess.
Several old faces were given fresh challenges.
Deputy leader Mr. Walter Roberts was moved to Works and Engineering, and ex-Shadow Youth and Sport Minister Mr. Dennis Lister to Transport.
Mrs. Lois Browne Evans -- the grande dame of the party -- is the new Shadow Delegated and Legislative Affairs Minister.
PLP Senators were also confirmed.
Senate Opposition leader is Sen. Milton Scott, also responsible for five Ministries.
These include Health, Social Services and Housing; Delegated and Legislative Affairs; Labour and Home Affairs; Human Affairs; and Environment.
Sen. Neletha Butterfield handles four portfolios.
These are Education; Community Affairs and Culture; Youth Sports and Recreation; and Transport.
Sen. Terry Lister also has four responsibilities: Finance; Tourism; Works and Engineering; and Management and Technology.
