Hot-shot Goater gunning for 200 not out

Shaun Goater is aiming has set his sights on another landmark by scoring the 200th goal of his prolific career.

The Bermudian striker celebrated his 100th strike in a Manchester City jersey in the 3-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester United last month.

But with that landmark in the bag and 192 career goals to his credit since arriving in England, he has now targeting a double century.

Goater, who was signed by Manchester United and has played for Rotherham and Bristol City before making the switch to Maine Road, has been a regular starter alongside Nicolas Anelka in the City frontline and added to his tally on Monday night against Sunderland.

"Certainly 200 goals is a reasonable target to aim for and a realistic challenge for me to achieve," the 32-year-old hitman told the ."A target like that is well within reach and I hope to do that soon. But I am realistic person and if you started talking to me about reaching 300 goals, I wouldn't pay any attention.

"But it would be nice to reach 200. As a player when you are young or an amateur, you always want to play at the highest level.

"When you achieve that, you reach a certain level of popularity. I think I have just achieved what I wanted to when I was a youngster.

"I have always wanted to do well and I have done that by living my life to ensure I can keep things in control."

Since arriving from Bristol City for a bargain ?400,000 in 1998, Goater has managed to fight off a string of players who have been drafted in with designs on his place in the starting line-up.

This campaign has been no different. First Darren Huckerby, then Chris Shuker were chosen by Kevin Keegan to partner Anelka while the Blues' chief has also played just one up front.

Goater's persistence and hard work on the training pitches at Carrington, though, have been rewarded, and he has started the last seven games.

"Right now, things are going for me," said Goater, whose future at Maine Road was the subject of speculation during the summer as other clubs monitored his situation. "I'm scoring, I've been given a chance and I am taking it."

"Being successful with this team brings an unbelievable amount of praise that comes from the fans and that is such a good feeling. It can inspire you more than anything.

"I am happy and thankful for the players I play alongside because they are all quality footballers.

"It has been nice to hit the landmark of 100 goals but I am still playing at the minute and I haven't time to dwell on it. You have to move on and keep going forward."
