Governor profiled in Bottom Line

Regulatory process is a key issue for Bermuda and the world, says Governor Sir John Vereker in an interview that appears in tomorrow's Bottom Line Magazine.

He said understanding the way that the international system expects the regulatory process and certain standards to be maintained for financial centres is significant in terms of global development, in his interview with business writer Pat Phillip Bassett for the magazine.

He discusses this issue and the British Government's view that the decision to go independent must be made on the basis of the expressed wishes of the people, in tomorrow's story, as Bermuda evaluates the pros and cons of the issue.

In addition, the magazine takes a close look at one America's principal news-makers in recent month - New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who has waged a campaign to ensure fair practices in the insurance market.

His reach has impacted Bermuda-based ACE as well as AIG, and in this issue, Bottom Line asks industry players about the impact his investigations will have on the industry. Risk managers stand to bear the brunt in terms of fall-out from the investigation, now that commission policies are under such close scrutiny. Business writer Lilla Zuill asks: “If insurers are not going to contribute as they have in the past, will the companies themselves now have to start paying for the services they received from brokers?”

Bottom Line also examines the Patriot Act and its effect on business, the news that long-awaited tort reform has been approved by the American Government, and takes a look inside the new Renaissance Re development on East Broadway.

Bottom Line Magazine will be available in tomorrow's Royal Gazette in the Hamilton area and selected retail outlets in the parishes.
