Dill set to seal pro deal with Stampede

Terrence Dill: Will realise a dream when he turns professional this week with the Buffalo Stampede.

Terrence Dill is on the verge of signing a contract with New York-based team Buffalo Stampede who will play in the newly formed Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League (ACPBL) this season.

The 24-year-old spent yesterday ironing out the terms of his contract and is due to put pen-to-paper this week.

"I haven't completely signed but I'm working on all the details today (yesterday), but it's official I'm playing for them," said Dill, who will emulate sons of the soil, Sullivan Phillips and David Patrick, who have both played professionally overseas.

"Some things didn't work out for me and a few roads opened up that allowed me to get this chance."

Stampede's general manager, and former Hall of Famer, Bouie Roosevelt watched Dill in action during a visit to Bermuda last summer and subsequently invited him for a three-day trial.

But Dill's chances of impressing were ruined when he turned his ankle forcing him returned home to recover from his injury and weigh up his next move.

He attended trials for a team in North Carolina and considered trying his luck in Europe before Stampede came calling again.

"I could have left and went other places but I chose to stay out here and stay close to the team," said Dill. "I trained vigourously and was playing at the park when I heard of an open try-out so I decided to go and try my luck.

"He (Bouie) had told me that New York was still on the table because the season didn't start until December and that is what made me come back.

"I went to North Carolina instead of Europe but my ankle was still weak so I couldn't perform at that trial."

Although Dill's journey to the pro level has been filled with obstacles he said he would not have wanted it any other way and believed his setbacks had made him a stronger character.

"I like the struggle and wouldn't have changed my journey because the reward is that much sweeter. I'd love to take the easy road but I knew there would be obstacles and I needed to deal with them as they came."

The Stampede have officially joined the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League (ACPBL) from the Premier Basketball League (PBL).

And Dill is hoping the Buffalo-based team will fare better than their struggling NFL cousins, the Buffalo Bills, this coming season.

"This is a brand new, the team isn't in the Premier Basketball League (PBL) any longer, and it's trying to compete with the NBA's Development League, so it's a great opportunity for anyone to showcase their talent in Buffalo.

"The city is great to represent, and the NFL team isn't doing that well, so hopefully we can be a good reason for the fans and the community to cheer."

The ACPBL is a top-flight minor league professional basketball league which is set to play its inaugural season in cities up and down the Atlantic Coast.

ACPBL commissioner James Schutz, stated: "We accepted the Buffalo Stampede into the league because they have two full seasons of play under their belt already and the team's front office is stronger and more stable than it has ever been."

The Stampede front office is currently working to secure the Division II facility of Daemen College as the team's new home this season. They kick off their league campaign on December 4 when they host Hudson Valley.
