Fahy and Ferguson return for Spring Meet

part in Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association's third Spring Meet at the BASA pool tomorrow (1.00 p.m.).

Twenty year-old Stephen Fahy, currently attending Yale University, and 21-year-old Trevor Ferguson, who is studying at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, will both see action in what is considered as another important warm-up meet for a number of international events this summer.

Fahy will be making his first local appearance this season. He has already achieved the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard in the 100 metres freestyle and 100m butterfly.

Joining Fahy in reaching Commonwealth marks are Stephen Troake in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke, Matthew Hammond in the 100m free and 200m free and Alicia Mullan in the 200m individual medley.

Tamika Williams, Ronald Cowen and Ferguson have all come close to booking their own Commonwealth Games tickets and tomorrow's meet will be their penultimate opportunity to reach the standard. The National Championships in June will provide one final chance before the Games are held in Malaysia in September.

However, swimmers will also be looking to qualify for the CAC Games which take place in Venezuela in August.

Several of Bermuda's younger swimmers have answered the call in the first two local meets and an overseas meet in Ontario to achieve qualifying standards for the Caribbean Championships in Barbados in July. And tomorrow will also offer them anotehr opportunity to make the grade.

However, only two swimmers are eligible to represent their country in each event so competition for places remains keen.
