Titles at stake on Front St.

Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) president Peter Dunne will be an anxious spectator tomorrow when the National Criterium Championships take place for the first time in Hamilton – incorporated into the annual IBC Front Street Race.

A new winner will be crowned in the four categories with some of Bermuda's top riders contesting for top honours.

Dunne, for one, is eager to see how the riders compete, knowing titles are at stake.

"While the national title is being offered for the first time, the IBC Front Street Race has been one of the most prestigious races in our calendar for many years," said Dunne. "Any race offering a title is huge and will draw the most competitors and we expect the same for this event.

"As usual, the chase up Burnaby Street will provide to be very challenging for the racers and a great viewing opportunity for the public."

The championship races will be contested in two categories – Junior (18 and under) and Open (over 18), male and female.

Junior favourite will be youngster Dominique Mayho who has won a race in the IBC Criterium Series this year against the big boys.

Competition in the Open division is expected to be fierce.

"There are a number of riders who could win the Open division as we have had plenty of different winners all year long," said Dunne.

"Dominique won one of the earlier series races against the adults but will compete as a junior, so he is a clear favourite for the junior male title but Tre-shun Correia, Vachon Cann and Mark Godfrey are all capable of pulling off the victory with the right turn of events.

"In the Open Male category, Mark Hatherley, Mark Lombardy and Darren Glasford are all contenders but they will be challenged by a huge field that includes Arthur Pitcher, Scott Williams and over two dozen other riders who would like the championship title."

There will also be races tomorrow for the younger junior riders aged eight to 15 and a series of races for the pee wees whose ages will range from two to 10. Rracing begins at 8.30 .
