Thomsons claim family double

Deanna and Garth Thomson show off their trophies after taking top prize at last weekend's National Time Trial Championships.

Husband and wife, Garth and Deanna Thomson, claimed the top prizes in the Bank of Bermuda Foundation National Cycling Time Trial Championships at Southside.

In near perfect conditions, the Thomsons took the male and female championship titles on Sunday from a field of more than 40 adults and 25 juniors competing in the time trial in which each rider starts separately and the winner is decided by the cyclist with the lowest elapsed time for the course.

Both were clear victors as Garth was four minutes ahead of his nearest competitor, Wayne Scott, and Deanna had more than two minutes over Karen Bordage.

Garth regained the trophy after Scott hoisted it in 2007.

The Bank Foundation has been involved in sponsoring the event for the last ten years and Jennifer Hedges has been the race director since its inception in 1996.

Coming up this weekend is Bermuda Bicycle Association's Queen's Birthday stage race which will include three races, starting with a circuit race at Morgan's Point, a criterium at the Clearwater Motor Sports Park and a hill climb up to St. David's Lighthouse.

The following weekend will see the RMS Construction National Road Race Championship at Southside which was won by Tyler Butterfield last year.

Next month sees an active schedule for the BBA with road races, time trials and a summer mountain biking programme commencing.
