Young 'Gades retain Jones Cup

Young Renegades placed their stamp on the Jones Cup with a 12-10 win over the Bermuda Youth team at National Sports Club in the annual New Year's Day under-21 game.

The result, which marked their second successive victory, was a fitting end to a game which they dominated for long periods.

For skipper Michael Kane, who missed last year's game with a broken leg, the win was even sweeter.

"Everybody played well,'' he said afterwards. "The forwards and backs did the job they were asked to do but I must commend Chris Garland and Dan Comer because they both had excellent games.'' Young Renegades, who were the larger team boasting an average height of six feet and average weight of 170 pounds in the pack, controlled much of the first half.

They won the majority of rucks and line-outs although Bermuda's Jonathan Lightbourne and fly half Geoffrey Redmond had some success in midfield.

Redmond opened the scoring for Bermuda 14 minutes into the game with a penalty, but Garland, Young Renegades' second row, scored a try nine minutes later.

Bermuda Youth, now down 5-3, began to surge forward with some good attacking moves between Redmond, Lightbourne, Justin Kendall and Danny Faria but these spurts lacked the final touch and were stymied by some fierce tackling from Young Renegades winger Nakia Wolfe-Ming.

Bermuda Youth came close to scoring in the 28th minute after lanky flanker Ian Roberts pulled down the ball in a line out. As the ball moved along the backs from scrum half Andy Rollin, Lightbourne dropped a simple pass only five yards from the Young Renegades try line.

Young Renegades made them pay dearly for this missed opportunity soon after, as Robert Rego went over from three yards out on the right and Kane converted to make the score 12-3 at half-time.

Bermuda Youth weathered tremendous pressure early in the second half, but this paid rich dividends when lock Chris Miato rumbled over and Redmond converted for the final score.

Teachers scored 102 points while conceding only five to convincingly take the Heel Sew Quick tens tournament on Monday.

The most savage beating was reserved for league leaders Police who Teachers crushed 43-0 in the final game.

In other games they defeated Mariners 26-0 and Renegades 33-5.
