talking on a mobile phone while driving and nearly causing a collision with a passing Police car.

This comes in light of concerns by Police and the Department of Transport to stop car owners from doing this.

Nalton Brangman, 40, of Vesey Street, Devonshire, pleaded guilty to the charge of driving without due care and attention.

Crown counsel Veronica Daley described the incident, which happened on Middle Road in Devonshire.

She said: "Police were travelling past Devonshire Christ Church when a car coming from the opposite direction swerved and narrowly missed a collision with them.'' Brangman had been talking on his mobile phone while driving and this had caused his attention to be distracted.

Immediately after being stopped by the Police, the defendant admitted his guilt and apologised for the incident.

Magistrate Edward King gave Brangman the minimum fine of $150 and said: "I can see this is a law-abiding citizen and that he's learned his lesson''.

But Mr. King gave the court advice for the future, saying: "For heaven's sake, one can't possibly expect to be to able concentrate while you're talking on the phone and have got one hand off the wheel.''
