Logie excited by young guns

Bermuda national team coach Gus Logie has heaped praise upon his new-look side and believes there is a buzz and energy within the camp he has not felt for some time.

Logie said he witnessed a marked improvement in the attitude and application of his team in Canada, with Bermuda wrapping up the One-Day International series 2-1 before completing a convincing win in yesterday's Intercontinental Cup match.

The likes of young guns Rodney Trott, Stefan Kelly, Tamauri Tucker and Oronde Bascome have continued their impressive development during the tour and according to Logie have helped create a fresh and exciting atmosphere.

He has now vowed to keep his close-knit squad together and will be selecting from the same 15-man group for Bermuda's Intercontinental Cup match against Scotland on Thursday.

"I think we've definitely seen a shift during this tour . . . a shift for the better," said Logie. "I think the young players have undoubtedly brought something new and different to the team, not just in the way they've played but with the way they've interacted with each other.

"I'll retain these players for the Scotland match and hopefully we can put on a good performance in front of our home supporters. There's no danger of any of the players getting carried away with themselves and we must look to build upon our recent success."

Only three World Cup veterans featured in Bermuda's travelling party with Logie partly forced to place an emphasis on youth after a number of senior players opted against attending pre-tour training sessions.

Despite being without seasoned campaigners Janeiro Tucker, Lionel Cann, Delyone Borden and controversial young all-rounder Malachai Jones, Bermuda have excelled in both the shorter and longer forms of the game with Logie greatly encouraged by his players' maturity, work ethic and killer instinct.

"We've played as a team and have also seen some excellent individual performances from the likes of captain Irving Romaine, Rodney Trott, Stephen Outerbridge, James Celestine, Jekon Edness, and young Stefan Kelly.

"We've always set high standards and had high expectations for our players but in the past our execution has been the problem – that's always been the problem for us.

"But everybody has shown a willingness to work, train and displayed a good understanding of their roles within the team and we've the basis of a successful unit."

Veteran Dwayne Leverock was also singled out for superlatives by Logie following the left arm spinner's ten-wicket haul to inspire Bermuda to victory in yesterday's four-day match.

"Leverock continues to prove what a good player he is at this level," he said. "He's evergreen and you just can't keep him down. He's a real livewire and a larger than life character."

Bermuda's next opponents Scotland are scheduled to train at the National Sports Centre's North Field at 10 a.m. today.
