Statistical Officer

Economics Division in the Department of Statistics

"I always enjoyed and felt comfortable working with numbers."

To say Reyel Bowen is busy is an understatement. Every day he sends out surveys to establishments, checks completed surveys, contacts companies and liaises with clients like CFOs and CEOs, accountants, and business owners.

"I also assist the Economics Division with estimating some of Bermuda's major economic indicators and on occasion I analyse the data."

The minimum education requirements for his position is an associate's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Mathematics, Economics, or Statistics. While a minimum of two years relevant work experience is also required.

"I chose this career path because I always enjoyed and felt comfortable working with numbers," he says smiling. "What I enjoy most about my job is gaining a better understanding and appreciation for Economics and Statistics. Also, I enjoy meeting the different people who visit the Department to ask questions about the surveys, statistics, and how these statistics could help their existing business or prospective business."

Mr. Bowen says the reward of doing his job is knowing that he is helping someone to understand statistics so that they can make better decisions.

"The skills I use regularly are basic math, a lot of critical thinking, problem solving, and communication."

What would surprise people most about the work he does is that he really enjoys the challenges, networking, and learning opportunities that the job offers.

His advice to any high school student thinking about a future in statistics is to focus on Math, English, Business, Accounting and Operating Systems.
