Overseas cadets get taste of Island life

Fourteen cadets and three officers from the US, Canada and UK are currently being hosted by the St. George's unit of the Bermuda Sea Cadet Corps.

The overseas cadets and officers are on an international exchange programme.

This annual two-week event gives the participating cadets the opportunity to experience the life and culture of Bermuda on a small scale, as well as the opportunity to pay courtesy visits with various dignitaries of the Government.

Visits are currently scheduled with Governor Sir John Vereker, Premier Alex Scott and Minister of Community Affairs and Sport Dale Butler.

The visiting cadets will also be given the opportunity to experience many of the general tourism events around the Island, with particular emphasis on Cup Match.

Through the reciprocal efforts of International sea cadet organisations, Bermuda's cadets are able to receive more specialised nautical training or participate in other International exchanges.

A contingent of Bermuda Sea Cadets visits Japan on a cultural exchange every two years.

Select Bermuda cadets participate annually on T.S. Royalist, a square-rigged sailing ship in the UK where they receive basic sail training almost unavailable elsewhere.

While in the UK, Bermuda cadets take full advantage of training at shore-based cadet training facilities and naval establishments.

The Navy League of Canada permits Bermuda cadets to train with their Royal Canadian counterparts.

Cadets between the ages of 12 and 16 participate in the Atlantic Region Summer Camps in Nova Scotia.

Bermuda Cadets also have an opportunity to participate in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) Navy League Cadet Orientation Camp, which gives them a feel for naval life as well as participate in the USNSCC International Exchange.

In October 15 cadets and officers of T.S. Admiral Somers, under the leadership of their Commanding Officer Lt. Cdr. (SCC) Dwayne Trott, will be travelling to the UK.

There they will join cadets and officers of the Kings Lynn Sea Cadet Unit to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar which took place on October 21, 1805.
