Renegades made to suffer as Simons runs in five tries
destroyed Renegades, scoring 31 points in Teachers' convincing 41-6 victory in the Amstel First Division on Sunday.
Simons' remarkable contribution of five tries and three conversions is believed to be the highest individual score for several years, although Renegade wing Barry Whitehead once scored six tries in an Easter Classic match.
Also scoring for the Reds, as they continued to chase league leaders Police, were national team winger Heath (Butch) Robinson and Craig Davis.
Renegades had started well with two early penalties from Phil Heaney, the second a huge kick from the half-way line.
But the floodgates opened in the second half when the versatile Simons, playing centre, took matters into his own hands.
Leaders Police were made to fight for their 28-8 victory over improving Mariners, with the match hanging in the balance until the final 20 minutes.
Tim Carr opened the scoring for Police with a neat penalty before Gareth Davies was allowed too much room around a maul and scampered home untouched with Carr converting.
But the Greens replied with a gem of a try when full back Dominic Hardy was worked free from deep to time a perfect pass for Gavin Corcoran to finish in style. Declan O'Loughlin's conversion attempt rebounded off a post.
Alan Oliver scored a drop goal and Carr added another penalty to increase the Police lead before half-time.
Neil Alexander worked hard for Mariners in the second half but the game was put out of reach when Alan Gorbutt stole a ball in a goal-line maul and crashed over. Carr converted again and before the end winger Mark Williams scored another try out wide after a good passing movement.
In Saturday's Second XV action, Teachers extended their lead with a 24-8 drubbing of Police and Mariners were beaten 5-0 by Renegades after having captain Peter Vosvenieks sent off by referee Kim White for stamping.
