Government details Club Med implosion

Countdown: Next Monday as Club Med is detonated into dust.

The beaches of St. George's will be closed to the public next Monday as Club Med is detonated into dust.

No one will be allowed within 1,000 ft of the former hotel as the controlled implosion takes place — scheduled for 10 a.m. Yesterday, experts rigged the building with explosives, and a team from Demolition Dynamics, of US firm DH Griffin Wrecking Co. sealed them into place. The Bermuda Police Service and an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit will now keep watch over the building until the implosion. The Bermuda Regiment will also patrol the fenced-off area at night to ensure no one gains access to the restricted site.

A Government spokesman said: "The public are strongly advised, for their own health and safety, to stay away from the hotel building at all times during the period leading up to the implosion."

Traffic restrictions will take place on Monday, between 7 a.m. and 12 noon, in order to clear the 1,000 ft safety zone.

The following junctions will be closed off: Barry Road with Grenadier Lane; Old Military Road with Slippery Hill; Government Hill Road with Sapper Lane; Park Gates with St. George's Golf Club; Anchorage Road with Naval Tanks Hill. Fort St. Catherine, Achilles Bay, Tobacco Bay, and 'Beach It' will also be closed off to the public. In addition, the Fort St. Catherine area will become a no-go zone for marine traffic.

The Government spokesman said: "Marine traffic will be prevented from anchoring or moving on the inside of the clearly-marked 'cruise ship' channel on either side of the fort, and may not tie up to any of the channel markers.

"All mariners wishing to anchor off and observe the implosion are encouraged to drop anchor to the oceanside of the 'Narrows' channel. The public is reminded to comply with any and all directions given by the Bermuda Police Service Marine unit, who will be in the area to assist in maintaining the 1,000 ft safety zone from the site of the implosion."
