Trust in God through good times and bad

Many times do we go through trials and tests in our lives and question God asking, why?Why do I have to go through this? Why aren’t things changing? How can I ever get through this?Maybe you’ve lost your job, and you don’t know how you’re going to pay your bills. Maybe you’re in ministry and your facing adversity, or maybe you marriage is failing and it seems like the trouble will never end.We all face testing times, but it’s during those times that our faith can grow. When our faith is tested we must look to God, praise Him continually, and trust Him.There are people whose faith is tested when a loved one passes away. It could be a family member, or a friend, and some wonder, why did God allow this to happen?Others may ask, does God really care that my daughter, son, mother, father, husband or best friend is no longer here and I feel all alone? Why did God allow my house to foreclose?Job lost his sheep, servants and camels (Job 1: 14-17). Also, in Job 1: 18 — 19 tells us 18 “While he was yet speaking there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house: 19 And behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead: and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.”Through all these circumstances Job didn’t curse God (Job 1: 22).Job passed the test of losing his children and possessions by not cursing God and living right in the eyes of the Lord. Satan wanted to take the test further and attack Job’s body. He got God’s permission, but God told Satan he couldn’t take Job’s life away (Job 2: 1- 7). Many people’s faith is tested physically with their health. There are some who are ill with cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, mental illness and more. There may be questions like, why would God allow me to get sick when I’m faithfully serving Him? Did I get ill because I sinned? Are you punishing me Lord? I believe that an inability to forgive, and disobedience to God, can bring on sickness/illness, but I also believe there are times God would allow us to be tested.Job’s wife told him to curse God and die (Job 2: 9). There are some unbelievers that may wonder and say, “Why does she serve God after her husband dies and her daughter has been put in a mental institution? If God is so powerful why didn’t He heal her from breast cancer? Some may question, “Why serve someone who has abandoned you?” The unbelievers may even tell you that your God is not real. In our relationship with God we must not allow what others think or say to stop us from trusting Him. In Job 2: 10 it says “But he said to her, “You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?” In all this Job did not sin with his lips.”When Job’s friends heard about what Job was going through, they came to see him and to comfort him (Job 2: 11). It’s nice when we are going through, we have friends that are there for us and will bring comfort. When his friends spoke each of them said that Job either sinned (Eliphaz, Job 4), Job should repent (Bildad, Job 8) and Job’s guilt deserves punishment (Zophar, Job 11). Instead of getting words of comfort from his friends, Job got words of discomfort. Sometimes we go through things because of our own choices, but like I said before, sometimes we go through because we are being tested. Our friends and other people may not understand why we are going through and begin to give words of discomfort. They may say it our fault we are going through this or that or we deserve what we are facing in our lives. They may even look down on us in our time of testing. This is when we have to go to God in prayer if we haven’t already and ask Him what His will is concerning this situation or circumstance. God will reveal to us these things if we are willing to listen to Him.Through everything Job’s friends had said, Job defended himself (Job 29). Defense is a natural reaction when we feel we are being attacked, judged or someone is against us. However, as believers God doesn’t want us defending ourselves, but leaving vengeance in His hands (Romans 12: 19). God wasn’t pleased with Job’s friends because of what they had spoken to Job (Job 42: 7). He told them to offer up a burned offering and that Job will pray for them and they did what God had told them (Job 42: 8 — 9).Job was given back all that he had and more. He prayed for his friends rightly even though they had treated him wrongly, he received his twofold restoration and lived for one hundred and forty years (Job 42: 10 — 17). Just like Job received his restoration after being tested we can too. If it’s a test that you are going through, it’s not meant to kill you. After you are tested and you remain in God’s will and way you will receive your restoration.
