Overseas school costs to jump, warns CST
their children to university in Canada.
This comes from the Directory of Canadian Universities which has projected that by the year 2000, tuition, room and board fees for a four-year programme will be between $54,000 - $97,000.
And because of this, president and CEO of the Canadian Scholarship Trust Foundation Mr. James Renahan, who was in Bermuda last week, believes now is the time for parents or grandparents to start saving by becoming part of CST.
He added, "With those numbers it becomes more important that parents or grandparents start to save as early as possible for their child's post secondary education.'' Mr. Renahan said the advantage of saving in the CST is that interest grows tax free.
"It is the oldest and largest registered educational savings plan available for schools worldwide,'' Mr. Renahan added.
"We know that education is the greatest investment of all. If grandparents especially want to leave their grandchildren a gift or a legacy they couldn't give a better gift than the funding of their grandchild's education,'' Mr.
Renahan said.
He added: "It's a legacy they will be remembered for forever. If a parent can answer yes to the following two questions, `Do you believe a post secondary education is important to your child's future whether it's university or college?' and, `Do you think its important to help your child financially in achieving his or her educational goals?' then a savings plan is the single best way to ensure that the funds will be available when your child is ready to go on to a post secondary education.'' "It was introduced in Bermuda in 1968 and it has been paying scholarships annually since 1972,'' Mr. Renahan said.
He added: "To date, it has paid out more than $166 million in scholarships to more than 56,000 students. And it has returned more than $228 million in principle to their parents.
