For bookkeeper Patsy Harriott it'll mark the end of a career.

Fifty years ago, on the morning of January 17, 1947, Miss Harriott set off for her first day's employment at C.E. Hinson Cooper's firm, now Cooper and Gardner architects and interior designers.

The firm was originally located in the Miles Building on Front Street and after various moves now operates from offices at 14 Par la Ville Road. The firm's projects include Marriott's Castle Harbour, Sonesta and Elbow Beach as well as St. James Court and St. George's Club.

"I started as a secretary -- typing and making prints of drawings and I also did bookkeeping. Then after about 15 or 20 years, I went into straight bookkeeping,'' she said.

After 50 years, Miss Harriott, a daughter of Arthur and Carolyn Harriott, said: "I just continue as I am. I suppose it is a milestone.'' Miss Harriott, who turned 70 last year, has never married.

Had she married, she believes it unlikely she would have stayed employed with Cooper and Gardner so long. Ironically, Miss Harriott said dealing with numbers "makes time fly.'' Ten years ago, Miss Harriott said she briefly reflected on her career but currently has no plans to retire.

"I enjoy my work.'' On her commitment to the same firm for half a century, she said: "I think it depends on the person. I know what I have to do and I do it. I take it day by day and get on with my work.'' She cited reading and knitting as her hobbies and said she has travelled to England, the US, as well as taken Mediterranean and Alaskan cruises. Fifty years of uninterrupted employment "is very unusual in this day and age and a positive message to others. This is a very long commitment and is exceptional,'' Cooper and Gardner senior partner John Gardner said.

"Miss Harriott is a superb, dedicated employee. Her integrity is beyond reproach,'' Cooper and Gardner partner Stuart Pearson said.

Past employees and current staff will gather tonight after work at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club to celebrate Miss Harriott's 50 years of service.

RETIRING -- After 50 years, bookkeeper Patsy Harriott still `enjoys her work'.
