Heritage Month additions
Cultural Affairs Minister Yvette Swan announced this week.
Planned are a youth debate to be held at the Berkeley Institute on May 21 and a Citizen's Recognition Day on May 4.
Sen. Swan said the new award is for "two unsung heroes'' who "give of themselves to the community''.
"We want to highlight people who have helped Bermuda to where it is now,'' she added.
The awards will be presented on Monday at 11.15 a.m. outside City Hall.
The programme will include music from the Warwick Academy Band and Victor Scott School Choir.
The Youth Debate, which will be televised on May 21, will feature the topic "This House believes good fences make good neighbours''. The station on which it will be aired has not yet been decided, but it will begin at 7.30 p.m.
The theme for this year's Heritage Month is "Unity Through Diversity''. Sen.
Swan said the theme is symbolic of "the fact that we all come from so many different places and that we can all come together''.
"This theme causes all of us to not only acknowledge, but reflect upon the differing and assorted elements of our island community,'' she added.
All of the usual activities will continue, with the highlight being the Bermuda Day Parade on May 25.
The parade will begin at 2 p.m. at the junction of Par-la-Ville Road and Church Street. It will make its way to Front Street via Queen Street and continue to Bernard's Park via Court and Church streets and Cedar Avenue.
The parade will have its usual assortment of majorettes, floats, costumed groups, and gombeys. Six parade marshals will be on hand along with the assistance of the Bermuda Regiment.
Plans are also afoot for the broadcast of a one-hour documentary, "Diversity: Fabrics and Faces of Bermuda''.
