Victim was jumped and robbed at cash machine

A 17-year-old boy who admitted robbing a man of $4,200 worth of goods will be remanded in Police custody until his sentencing date in October.

Keishun Trott, of Devon Springs Road, in Devonshire, pleaded guilty to robbing Joseph Maxwell Budzynski of a computer bag, IBM laptop, Ray Ban sunglasses, an Apple iPod, Voss ear phones, LG cellphone, blue Nolan Helmet and a money clip containing a Bank of Butterfield card and cash, on March 5.

Magistrates' Court heard that the victim was riding home on his motorbike from the Bermuda Squash Club on Middle Road, in Devonshire, at 8.45 p.m. and stopped at Lindo's Market in Devonshire to use the ATM machine.

He stopped outside the closed grocery store and rode his bike up the ramp to be closer to the machine, then he withdrew $100 and closed the transaction.

The victim looked around him and saw three or more men approaching him at the ATM, one with a hood over his head and blue scarf over his face.

According to a Police statement, the men took the victim's $100 away from him saying "give me that" and pulled him to the ground. They also took off the victim's helmet and kicked him to the body and face, the court heard.

The men demanded the victim's pin number, and fearing for his life he gave it to them and they took another $200 from his bank account.

On August 26, Trott was interviewed at the Hamilton Police Station and admitted he remembered the robbery and taking part in it with three other people, who were not in front of the court yesterday.

His lawyer, Kenneth Savoury, asked for leniency and argued that Trott was "salvageable" due to his good family support and steady employment.

However, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner stated it wasn't a small stealing offence, it was a "planned operation" where someone was robbed, beaten up and stripped of all their belongings.

Mr. Warner asked: "Where were the parents when this 17-year-old boy was robbing people? Why should I think they are going to pay more attention to him now than they did before?"

He ordered a social inquiry report for Trott and remanded the teenager at the Co-ed facility until October 9.
