Bottle attack earns man one year in prison
A man has been jailed for a year for bottling a teenager in the head during a christening party for the victim's godson.
Kent DeShield, 37, attacked Shea Wade, 17, after confronting him at the event at Shelly Bay Park in April.
He ruptured his victims's eardrum in the attack with a glass beer bottle. He later told Police the dispute was over $50 he suspected Wade's cousin had stolen from his house.
Both DeShield and Mr. Wade live at different addresses in Cobb's Hill, Paget.
DeShield, a labourer, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm at an earlier court hearing. He said he was drunk at the time, and apologised for his actions.
Sentencing him yesterday after considering background reports, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner noted the extent of the victim's injuries and DeShield's previous convictions, including one for assault.
"There's no other way to deal with you other than by immediate custodial sentence," he told him. "You can't get drunk and go around and assault people causing them serious injuries."
