Residents 'fed up' after shots fired in the air

Police walk through Fentons Drive, Pembroke after gunshots were fired in the area Tuesaday afternoon.

Residents of Parsons Road say they are "fed up" with ongoing violence, after two men rode through their neighbourhood firing gunshots into the air.

A resident from Fentons Drive told The Royal Gazette that people were "getting numb" to such incidents.

"We keep hearing them; every month there is something going off.

"We can hear shots up 42nd (St. Monica's Road), Middletown, Curving Avenue. We are fed up. We guys want something to change. The Police just take too long to get to where we are."

A Police spokesman said they arrived at the scene around 2.40 p.m. in Pembroke yesterday.

No one was reported injured, however forensic evidence found at the scene showed a gun had been discharged.

Area residents said between five and six gunshots had been fired.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said: "There was an immediate Police response to the confirmed firearm incident."

Officers searched the surrounding areas for the would-be shooters first, before investigating the scene, he said.

Residents who spoke to this paper said they were worried a small child could have been hit while playing outside.

One person said: "Schools are out. It's like 40 children [that live] around here. Suppose they would have shot one of them? What would have happened then?"

According to one man who witnessed the incident, a Police car had been on patrol in the area for 20 minutes — moments after they left, the gunmen rode up.

"As soon as that Police car left the guys came and rolled up and bam, bam, bam, bam.

"The Police car was up there for 20 minutes. Ten minutes after they left those guys went to the top of the hill.

"That is the only way to come up and down the hill. I think it's stupid. I am disgusted with all of this because it is not the first time this has happened.

"I lost my godson through this violence and every time I hear this now. I can hear it when it happens up there, down there and around the neighbourhood."

The man continued: "The ones that are doing it, they need to realise that they are hurting people's families.

"What if someone comes up to them, misses them and hits their children by mistake? It has got to stop."

Another man said while he felt safe living in the neighbourhood, he too was concerned about the young ones.

"It's too much kids up and down here. It's just pure families. It's like the whole community is one family."

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward, Mr. Caines said.

"At 2.40 p.m. Police responded to a report of a firearms incident that took place on Fenton's Drive in Pembroke.

"It appears that two men came over the hill and discharged a firearm however no one was hit. They then made good their escape."

"Anyone who may have seen anything or anyone acting suspiciously in the area should contact Police on 295-0011 or the Crime Stoppers hot line on 800-8477."
