Why Bermuda?
June 11, 2009
Dear Sir,
Our Government is again sinking to a new low in a secretive decision to import Guantánamo bay internees to live in our islands. The US does not want them – why us? Do we need more problems on this small dot in the Atlantic? Just think that we might not want a terrorist cell here. If it is, then soon there will not be just four here. What about the ramifications of this happening with travel and internal safety? If the Police cannot solve murders or stop gang activity here, what are our options? The present Government did not have the professional ability to discuss this with the Governor or the Home Office. That says a lot as regards the people of Bermuda and their well being.

The Bondarenko factor

Dear Sir,
This Premier wants us to be compassionate for the four prisoners sent here? Where was the Government's compassion when the young Bondarenko family from Russia sailed here and needed to stay just awhile longer and then head on to Canada? They were sent packing during hurricane season and bad weather with two small kids on board. Compassion? I think not.

The major issue
June 16, 2009
Dear Sir,
I have minimal issues with allowing these four displaced persons being relocated as their home country may be a threat to their lives if they return. But when the US thanks Bermuda for making the United States safer place because we took in these people that makes me alarmed. Why should Bermuda take the risk the US will not take on? My major issue is that someone allowed the repatriation without consultation. Dr. Brown vowed years ago that he would come back to Bermuda and bring Bermuda down. He is achieving his goal. When will it stop?

What about our people
June 11, 2009
Dear Sir,
I wonder if our leader in his self perceived "infinite wisdom" knows something that we don't know. Granted Bermuda and the US have had a positive relationship over the centuries. However, has the Premier thought about why the US didn't want these four Uighurs in the US? They are either too dangerous (they have supposedly admitted al Qaeda ties) or would be in too much danger in the US. But he feels it OK to have these people in Bermuda?
It's great that millions of Americans can feel safe now that the alleged terrorists have been given asylum by Bermuda, but what about the safety of our own people? Why not paint a huge target over the entire island so that their enemies, whoever they may be, can locate them? Once again, the Premier has demonstrated more concern for people other than the Bermudians who he is supposedly employed by! There are hundreds of people in Bermuda who have been in search of permanent residency on our island for various reasons, to no avail. Someone should tell them to join al Qaeda and then seek asylum/refuge on the island. Apparently that works quickly!

Dear Sir,
How is it that these four men can get Bermuda status right away, but my wife can't get for another eight years?

Dear Sir,
Re. Uighurs Uighurs everywhere.
Four Chinamen flew through the night
Unaware that they would cause a fight
Brown at the helm and ever faithful sidekick Burch
Left Her Britannic Majesty in the lurch
Ignore the Queen for I am King, Slayton and I will have a fling
Never mind the Uighurs' dubious past
Free them now, and free them fast
"Humanitarian aims" was Brownie's chant
As citizenship he said he'd grant
Never mind the threat to our limb and life
Ewart rides out to embrace the strife
Cannon loose and naïve planner Why do we follow this dubious banner
Microscopic state, a roaring mouse,
Let's hope it brings down Brown's house

Change the leadership
June 12, 2009
Dear Sir,
After the Premier's latest move, any clear thinking Bermudian should ask for, demand rather, a change in leadership. Where does Dr. Brown get the authority to unilaterally accept four Chinese aliens with no official country domicile, offer them Bermuda status, offer them employment and provide housing. He knows little of their intentions and the very fact that they were deemed terrorists and imprisoned should really put a scare into the Bermuda population. I guess it didn't bother Dr. Brown; does he think that their presence on the island is part of the 400th year celebration. Another grandstand performance by the Premier who probably thinks that there is a photo opportunity in his decision. Time to go Ewart, you've worn out your welcome.

No need for secrecy
June 12, 2009
Dear Sir,
Was the recent "humanitarian" decision made by the Premier Dr. Ewart Brown and Senator Lt. Col. David Burch, on behalf of the citizens and residents of the Islands of Bermuda, strictly for political reasons (perhaps regarding the recent relations with the USA concerning the much discussed tax situation) or strictly for a humanitarian reason – of which if this was the reason entirely, there should have been no need for such secrecy, in my opinion, and the decision should have been made by the Parliament as a whole and not only by two members of Parliament.
Or, maybe it was for a combination of these reasons? I just wonder why this transpired the way it did. What is the hidden agenda?
