Hogges show fighting spirit

Bermuda Hogges bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Western Mass Pioneers on Saturday to grab a comfortable win yesterday afternoon at BAA Field.

Goals from Lloyd Holder and Michael Parsons after an own-goal from James Greenlist gave Hogges their first win in four games, and was all the more impressive given the number of players out on national team duty.

The Hogges dominated the game for large spells and could and should have won by a greater margin, but Aljame Zuill had one of those days when nothing would go in.

It mattered little, however, and the result gave the Hogges a platform to build on ahead of the game against Charlotte Eagles next weekend.

"It's tremendous for us to have got at least one result out of these two games considering we were playing without a lot of our national team players," said Hogges co-owner, Paul Scope.

"The guys who have come in have done really well, and have lifted the spirits of the club with their enthusiasm, and approach. We are looking forward to welcoming the guys back from the national team, but it's going to be difficult to drop some of the guys who have come in.

"I don't think Western Mass threatened us at all over the two games, and only a mistake cost us in the first game. They might be unhappy at having to play twice in two days, but we didn't want that either.

"And they have played us three times with a weakened team, so they can't complain too much."

It's not that Hogges played badly on Saturday, they had plenty of chances, they just failed to take them. And then on the one occasion that they switched off, Western Mass punished them for it.

Down to 10 men after Robert Wilson had been sent off minutes before half-time, the Hogges were always going to be under pressure for the rest of the game. The goal they conceded though was all of their own making.

Nigel Burgess, the goalkeeper, tipped a ball over the bar that he really should have caught, and when no-one picked up the run of Jay Willis, the Western Mass defender, from the resulting corner, he had the easiest of finishes from eight yards out.

The Hogges struggled after that, and with a man down never really managed to get back into the game.

The closest they came was when Kyle Lightbourne fired a free kick inches wide from 25 yards out.
