Kyle's cup hopes dashed as Leeds striker hits extra-time hat-trick
Kyle Lightbourne's Walsall saw their hopes of a major FA Cup upset dashed in extra time last night when South African striker Phil Masinga scored three times to seal a 5-2 victory for Premier League Leeds United in a third round replay.
Walsall, who were denied an upset at home by a late Leeds equaliser 10 days ago, twice hit back in the replay after Leeds had gone ahead.
Brian Deane's eighth minute goal was wiped out by Martin O'Connor's penalty and then Leeds defender David Wetherall, who scored his team's late leveller at Walsall, managed to score at both ends, his own goal and Walsall's second coming late in the game.
Once the match went into extra time Leeds kicked into overdrive with substitute Masinga netting in the 103rd, 107th and 114th minutes to make sure they advanced to a fourth round tie against First Division Oldham.
Lightbourne, meanwhile, gained valuable exposure in the media in the build-up to the replay, having been featured in an article in the mass circulation Sunday Express in which he spoke about the prospect of upsetting Leeds at the second attempt.
The former two-sport star revealed in the article how he was looking to add Leeds to his impressive lists of scalps, having once dismissed Test captains Mike Atherton and Richie Richardson during his days as a promising left-arm fast bowler in Bermuda.
"Football has always been my game, but as a youngster I was picked by the International Cricket Committee for a youth tournament (Dean Minors was the other representative from Bermuda in 1988),'' Lightbourne told the reporter.
"Atherton was captain of the England youth team at the time and one of the three wickets I took in the match. I had Richardson caught and bowled playing for Bermuda against Antigua.'' The article ran under the headline "Lightbourne aims bouncer at Leeds'' and also contained a photo of the Bermuda star.
The first match against Leeds finished 1-1 with Lightbourne missing a couple of chances that could have sealed the match for Third Division Walsall who are second in the standings.
"There would have been no way back if I had put away a chance late in the game,'' Lightbourne accepted of the first match at Walsall's ground in the West Midlands. "But we go to Elland Road with confidence,'' he added.
Walsall had been confident of repeating the feat of Mansfield Town who knocked Leeds out of the Coca-Cola Cup.
"We can play a lot better than we did in the first leg,'' said Lightbourne on the weekend. "We didn't really knock the ball around like we can so there is plenty of room for improvement.'' Improvement has certainly been used often to describe Lightbourne in his second season with Walsall. He had a disappointing first taste of professional football two years ago when he spent six months at Third Division Scarborough before being released in April, 1993 after a change of managers made things difficult for him on the Yorkshire coast.
Determined to have another crack at professional football, Lightbourne bounced back with Walsall and this season has justified a new contract by leading their scoring with 16 goals which puts them in the thick of the promotion race.
His own personal success has not gone unnoticed and some top clubs have have reportedly been watching the 26-year-old Bermudian.
This season manager Chris Nicholl has been playing Lightbourne through the middle of the attack -- one of the main reasons for his goal scoring success.
"It was difficult last season playing on the wing,'' Lightbourne explained.
"The club had three central strikers and because I was left-footed I was asked to play out wide.'' Lightbourne began this campaign with a 20-goal target, one which has been increased following his success so far. "I'm aiming for 30 goals, at least,'' the striker revealed.
"I'd be cheating myself if I don't get that many.'' The FA Cup now history, Lightbourne and his team-mates can concentrate on getting Walsall promoted to the Second Division.
Leaders of the Third Division, Carlisle, also lost their third round replay last night, going down 3-1 at home to Sunderland while Lightbourne's former team, Scarborough, lost 2-0 to Watford.
The only upset last night saw Swansea of Division Two upset First Division leaders Middlesbrough 2-1 away from home to set up a glamour fourth round tie against either Newcastle or Blackburn who meet in one of eight replays tonight.
In Scotland, Motherwell squandered a chance to trim Rangers 14-point lead in the Premier Division by losing 2-0 at Kilmarnock.
