Tyrrell to break BFA silence

silence over the national team's exit from the World Cup -- more than six weeks after Bermuda were knocked out by Antigua.

The BFA have called a press conference for 2.00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at the Ministry of Youth and Sport, when Tyrrell will read a statement addressing "issues facing the BFA since our elimination from the World Cup qualifying tournament''.

The man at the top of soccer's governing body had suggested that a statement would come rather sooner, when Tyrrell told The Royal Gazette on May 3: "There are some issues that have to be taken care of first with regard to the affiliates as well as executive and pending that we will be making a statement next week.'' A month later, the BFA will finally have their say on issues which generated lively debate on the pages of the Island's newspapers and through the broadcast media in the days after Bermuda went out.

Technical director Clyde Best and national coach Robert Calderon have both departed since the Antigua match at the National Stadium on April 23, and it is possible the conference could address who will take charge of the team in the future.

Questions surrounding the campaign, such as the reasons behind the absence of Bermuda's best two players, Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne, for both legs of the Antigua tie are likely to be addressed.

Since eliminating Bermuda on the away goals rule after the teams drew 1-1 on aggregate, Antigua have themselves been beaten by St. Vincent, who go through to the `Super 12' group stage.

But Antigua get a second chance to advance when they meet Guatemala in a play-off. St. Vincent's first game in the Super 12 series is against 1998 World Cup finalists Jamaica.
