Phenomenal Women to host rally... for men

A leading women's group will launch an awareness and inspiration day aimed at addressing some of the issues facing Bermuda's men.

Phenomenal Women Inc. Bermuda is calling Saturday, September 13, a "National Men's Day Initiative" which will combat a "social crisis" on the Island. The whole community is invited to join in at the National Sports Centre, said Margaret Giloth, president of the Bermuda chapter.

The free event will begin with a "renewal" rally and involve a men's shoe drive, soup kitchen and a fundraising bike-a-thon showcasing local and overseas bikers, plus performances and literature.

"We need to take steps to end the social ills that plague Bermuda's male population — steps that will help restore the dignity, honour and self-worth of our men," Ms. Giloth declared.

The event will focus on men of all ages, particularly young and older fathers reconnecting with their children. "The absent father syndrome is far too prevalent in Bermuda. If we want to start really addressing the root cause of our social ills, this is the place to start."

And, Ms Giloth is taking her enthusiasm for social change to the streets. The organisation will be visiting places where people need help, from prisons to relapse prevention centres.

"We've talked with men about Bermuda's social ills and they were right in line with our vision and the root causes of our problems," she said.

"They are the family breakdown, poor child reading, lack of respect for themselves and women. These men represent the 'invisible' men of Bermuda. They're on the wall — they are not seen as individuals and don't have a voice. However, when you approach and listen to them they have the same thoughts, concerns and insight as anyone else."

Furthermore, she encouraged the community to help find solutions to fight the adversity.

Phenomenal Women Inc. Bermuda is a charity founded in 2006 by Ms Giloth to help women share common goals, dreams, ideas and situations.

Having spent the first two years focusing on issues important to women, the organisation is branching out to assist men in regaining physical, emotional and spiritual strength allowing them restoration and dignity. For more information contact Ms Giloth on 734-4034.
