Attacked man remains in intensive care, two more violently robbed

A man who suffered serious head injuries on Wednesday when he was beaten by a group of men remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) last night.

The victim, a 25-year-old from Sandy's, was attacked by a group wielding what Police described as 'blunt objects' as he sat on a motorcycle in Bowes Lane, Sandy's, late that night.

His condition at was listed as critical but stable at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital yesterday afternoon. He had been taken off the critical list by yesterday evening, with a spokesman saying he was stable, but still in the ICU.

The assault was one of three violent incidents that unfolded across the Island on Wednesday evening, which also saw an elderly man fall victim to an attempted armed robbery at a Pembroke store. Two men waiting at a bus stop in Southampton were also robbed by a man brandishing a blade.

The three incidents were not viewed by the Police as linked.

In the early hours of yesterday another robbery took place this time in Woodlands Road, Pembroke, with the culprits wielding crash helmets.

A Police spokesman explained that when officers arrived at the scene at 1.10 a.m, they spoke with the victims, a 40-year-old Pembroke man and a 53-year-old Devonshire man.

"They stated that around 12.40 a.m. they were walking along Woodlands Road towards Bull's Head car park when two unknown men on a motorcycle approached them. The suspects assaulted the victims with crash helmets, took a quantity of cash from them and then made good their escape," said the spokesman.

The victims were taken to hospital. The 53-year-old man, who suffered facial injuries, was said to be on a general ward yesterday evening.

The other man was treated and released.

The suspects are described as two light skinned black males believed to be in their late teens or early 20s. One of suspects was approximately 5'8" tall and the other was approximately 5'10" tall. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.
