Music brings money in for Middleton fund

Bermuda's rock bands helped raise $6,000 for a Trust fund set up in the name of slain Canadian teenager Rebecca Middleton.

It brings the amount raised since the death of the 17-year-old more than four weeks ago to more than $46,000.

On Sunday DJ Paul Sofianos helped stage a rock concert at the Oasis nightclub with bands performing including Shaky Ground, the Kennel Boys, Seventh Heaven, the Wharf Tavern Jam Band, Highway and Last Rites.

Last night Mr. Sofianos, who presents the afternoon show on Mix106, said: "We took a little over $5,500 on the night and with the corporate sponsors we are hoping to make more than $6,000.

"All the bands were great and all the people were great. It was a very good night.'' He added: "We were disgusted by what happened to Rebecca and we wanted to do something to show that Bermuda cared.'' Ms Middleton's body was discovered in the early hours of Wednesday, July 3, on Ferry Reach. She had been stabbed.

Two men have since appeared in Magistrates' Court in connection with her murder -- Justis Raham Smith, 17, was charged with premeditated murder and Kirk Orlando Mundy, 21, was charged with being an accessory after the fact.

After her death a Bermuda dentist started local fundraising for the Rebecca Middleton Scholarship Trust, set up in her home town of Bellville, Ontario.

Last night Dr. Campbell said more than $40,000 had so far been raised -- excluding the $6,000 raised on Sunday.

"The Oasis event has been mentioned in the Canadian press and the Middleton family is extremely grateful,'' added Dr. Campbell.

"They feel that Bermuda is responding their daughter's death in a most gracious way.'' MURDER MUR
