Challenger opens the gap

The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club's Contest also enjoyed a pleasing day of racing, placing a consistent second in both races.
Skipper Paula Lewin -- the first woman ever to take the helm of a Fitted Dinghy -- proved to be tough competition for the six male skippers. She guided Contest from second last into second place in the 4 p.m. race.
Port Royal , sailing out of the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club with Paul White at the helm, gave one of her better performances in the day's first race, managing to place third. But her luck ran out in the second race when she sank.
The RHADC'S Elizabeth suffered a blow in the first race when her mast broke in half just after the start. However, skipper Brian White was able to secure another in time to compete in the second race.
Echo , skippered by Peter Bromby, gave surprisingly mediocre performances in both races, finishing last and second to last.
Contest , with Andreas Lewin at the helm in the first race, took the lead for the first half. She was followed closely by Port Royal and Victory .
Echo and her sister dinghy Challenger , skippered by Paul Fisher, lagged behind, apparently concentrating on beating each other.
Victory , with Michael Oatley at the helm, moved in swiftly on Contest on the fifth leg after making a couple of effective tacks. She managed to maintain a 50-yard lead to the end, winding up with the E.R. Williams Cup.
