Victory hoping for change in fortune

A report in Wednesday's newspaper incorrectly stated that the fitted dinghy Port Royal II sails out of Sandys Sports Club. The vessel, in fact, sails for the Night White Dinghy Association.

A year after a broken sail bounced Victory from contention during the opening of the Coronation Cup series, skipper David Hillier enters tomorrow's fitted dinghy season-opening three-race series with renewed optimism.

Racing gets underway in St. George's Harbour at 11.00 a.m. with the first race for the Heritage Cup, followed by the second race at 1.00 p.m. and a third at 3.00 p.m.

Haunted by the mishap during the Heritage Cup opener last year which he was leading only to see Victory lose out to eventual winners Port Royal , Hillier is keeping his fingers crossed for better fortunes this time around.

He and his crew, many who were involved during the entire series last season, intend to make a spirited attempt to snatch not only the Coronation Cup series this year but also the Jubilee Cup.

The upbeat skipper said: "This year we are going for both, but we want to get off to a good start by doing well on Thursday. Unfortunately we broke a mast in the first race last year and we don't want a repeat performance because they are expensive.'' While the incident forced Victory out of the first race, Hillier was able to use another smaller sail in the next two races and got a second and a fourth place finish.

Willie White's Port Royal took honours in the first race while Contest , skippered by Roger Mello, won the following two races.

Port Royal also won the overall Coronation Race series for the season, beating Victory into second. Contest was third followed by Elizabeth and Challenger .

But Hillier feels that Victory's chances of winning the title this season are good, basing their strength on the return of many of his crew members who are familiar with the handling of the dinghy.

"We are quite confident going into the new season because I fortunately have a lot of the same crew returning,'' he said. "Michael Oatley will be on the main seat while other members will be his sister Leatrice Roman, Keith Ward and Peter Rego. The crew, who I will be rotating, are Paul Weatherly, Allan Frith and Jason Peniston.'' Veteran Martin Siese's Challenger was rumoured to be struggling for a crew but some of the older members are expected to be persuaded to come out and participate while Allan Powell's Elizabeth will be the fifth boat racing this season.

The fleet: Victory (David Hillier, St. George's Dinghy Club); Challenger (Martin Siese, Sandys Boat Club); Contest (Roger Mello, RBYC); Elizabeth (Allan Powell, RHADC); Port Royal (Willie White, Sandys Sports Club).
