Police wipe out Bay's perfect record
Police 118-4 Police condemned Bailey's Bay to their first Premier League defeat of the season after their bowlers made the most of a damp wicket at Police Field yesterday.
Opening bowlers Freston Hurdle and Richard Austin took three wickets each for Police, ripping quickly through the Bay top order and reducing them to 117, their lowest league total of the season.
Police knocked off the 118 needed for victory with six wickets to spare to round off a miserable weekend for Bay who had been beaten in the Camel Cup final by St. George's on Saturday.
But for Police, whose players met for a crisis meeting last Tuesday following last week's nine-wicket thrashing by Willow Cuts, the victory was a remarkable success, and only their second win of the season.
Police skipper Dennis Archer led by example with a fine, all-round performance, taking two for 28 with the ball, before opening the batting and scoring 27.
Archer had no hesitation in asking Bay to bat on a drying pitch and he admitted it had been a particularly good toss to win.
"There was still some moisture in the pitch from overnight rain, but the important thing was we bowled pretty well early on to make the most of it,'' said Archer.
"I didn't expect us to beat Bay so comfortably. They were probably still on a low after the Camel Cup final.'' Archer felt that his team's midweek crisis meeting had borne fruit.
"We went to the meeting and we decided to show renewed commitment and this win is the result of that. We have players who can perform well and we can go on to do better.'' Successive breakthroughs for Hurdle, who finished with three for 23, and Austin, who took three for 22, soon had Bay struggling on 28 for five.
Skipper Charlie Marshall was the only batsman to resist the Police onslaught, scoring 43 before being run out.
Police got off to a great start, openers Archer and Andrew Rollins putting on 50 for the first wicket, before Archer became one of three batsmen to be caught by Dennis Trott.
The runs came slowly and three batsmen -- Rollins, S.Lightbourne and N.Steede -- were caught on the mid-wicket boundary trying to push the score along.
Ferdinand Thorne hit a solid 21 not out to steer Police to victory in the 42nd over.
Somerset Bridge 274-8 Social Club 51 Brian Gibbons scored his maiden century in a cricket career spanning nearly quarter of a century to help Somerset Bridge to an emphatic victory over Social Club at St. John's Field.
Gibbons smashed 117 off 120 balls as Bridge raced to 274 from their 50 overs.
Gibbons said afterwards: "It feels great to have scored a hundred at last after going so close before. I have got to the 90s several times and once got 98 not out.
"I wouldn't say it was my best innings ever, and I gave three chances, but I just took my time and played straight and it worked out well.'' Gibbons was well supported by Dennis Brangman (32), Denzil Dill (22) and Ronald Richards (19), as Social Club did not help themselves by conceding 45 extras.
Durard Cann took seven for 24 from his 7.3 overs and together with Denzil Dill, who took three for 21, bowled Social Club out for 51 in 15.3 overs.
Cleveland 309-5 PHC 175 Peter Philphott hammered an unbeaten 125 to lead Cleveland to a crushing victory over PHC at Sea Breeze Oval.
Philpott struck 10 fours and seven sixes as Cleveland plundered the PHC attack for more than a run a ball, clocking up 309 for five from their 50 overs.
Opener Alan Douglas and Carlton Smith hit 44 apiece to pile on the misery for PHC and Aaron Adams chipped in with 20.
Opening bowlers Carlton Smith (three for 30) and Merkell Smith (three for 34) helped to polish off PHC for 175, though Cal Waldron hit a fighting unbeaten 64.
Somerset 161 St. David's 163-5 Lionel Cann steered St. David's to a five-wicket triumph with an unbeaten 36 at Somerset Cricket Club.
Shea Pitcher (31) and Chris Foggo (21) provided solid support in helping the East Enders pass Somerset's 161.
Del Hollis, with four for 50, was the pick of the St. David's bowlers, as Tony Cheeseman top-scored for the home side with 36 and Craig Brangman hit 26.
Devonshire 116 Willow Cuts 81 Devonshire enjoyed a surprise victory over Cuts in a low-scoring encounter at Devonshire Rec.
Wendell Swan was the batting hero for Devonshire, top-scoring with 42 to boost his side's total to 116.
For Cuts, Kevin Fubler took a remarkable four wickets for three runs and Ossie Hinds four for 19.
