Swan ready to run for old seat in wake of Davis arrest

Kim Swan

Following the arrest of St George's West MP Nandi Davis, the former occupant of her seat in Parliament said he was “available” to run for the constituency.Former MP Kim Swan spoke in the wake of Ms Davis being charged with a single count of causing wilful damage.Mr Swan finished third in the general election with 214 votes, falling behind the Progressive Labour Party's Renee Ming, who lost to Ms Davis by a slim margin of just four votes.Although the One Bermuda Alliance last night declined to comment on how the party intends to deal with the matter, granting voters the right to recall MPs was part of the party's pre-election platform statement. The OBA holds a slender, two-seat majority in the House of Assembly with 19 seats, while the Progressive Labour Party has 16 seats and there is one Independent MP, Terry Lister.Mr Swan said last night that if voters supported him, he would throw his hat in the ring for the St George's West constituency. However, he said he hadn't been approached by the OBA as a possible candidate.“I'm an Independent. That's how I ran, and that's where my comments are from,” Mr Swan said.“I'm available to make a contribution to my Country, but I've seen what the partisan focus can bring.“I look at running one day again and would not rule out running, but I'm an Independent looking to do what's best.”Ms Davis was unavailable yesterday, and Mr Swan declined to comment on whether he thought she should step down over the controversy. However, he added: “Politics has been in my blood since I was a young boy. I'm not elected by the choice of the people, but I am available to serve. That's where I ran, and that's where I stand.”The former head of the United Bermuda Party opted to run as an Independent in the last election. He and Charles Swan remained as UBP MPs after the bulk of their colleagues opted in 2011 to join the former Opposition Bermuda Democratic Alliance, which later became the One Bermuda Alliance.*The print version of this story contained serious factual errors about the outcome of the December 2012 Constituency 2 election.
