Dale leads by example

Bailey's Bay 61 Flatts' teenagers succeeded where their senior team failed when they dethroned Bailey's Bay in the second round of the Junior Eastern Counties on Saturday at Sea Breeze Oval.

Sent in by Bay captain Clevon Hill, Flatts could only muster 115 as Hill did the major bowling damage by taking four for 29 off 12 overs with four maidens.

Kiya Darrell, who shared the new ball with Garnell (Monty) Hollis, claimed three for 22 off 11 overs while Hollis was one for 14 off eight.

Flatts captain Dale Benjamin's fine example not only enabled his team to pull off a comfortable 54-run win in the end but also landed him the man-of-the-match award.

Coming to the wicket at 29-3, Benjamin was ninth out on 115, falling to Hill for 44. Just two other Flatts batsmen reached double figures, opener Ricardo Brangman and number six batsman Khomeini Talbot, each with 13. There were also 22 extras to boost the total.

Talbot and Benjamin then showed their fellow bowlers how to protect a modest total when they claimed seven of the Bay wickets between them. Talbot started the Bay slide when he removed Hollis in his first over on his way to three for 19 from 11 overs. That first over was one of seven maidens he bowled.

Benjamin showed his promise as an allrounder when he bowled impressively for 10 overs to finish with four for three. Eight of his 10 overs were maidens.

The other Flatts bowlers were also economical, Marquel DeShields giving up just seven runs in his six overs with five maidens and a wicket while Nelson Bascome had figures of one for two from six overs with five maidens. Of the 39 overs Flatts bowled, 28 were maidens as Bay could only manage 61 in reply.

Andre Berkeley was their only batsmen in double figures with 13 while Flatts gave up 20 extras.

Flatts will now meet St. David's in the final on August 26.

SEAGULL RACE SLG Forecast of choppy seasons for tomorrow has forced the organisers of the annual Around the Island Seagull Race to be postponed until Saturday, September 2.

A spokesman for the group said: "With the hurricane still lurking in the Atlantic ocean the prevailing seas are expected to be too high.'' A record field of 50 boats had entered the race, including several new crafts that have been constructed in a bid to beat the record of three hours and 19 minutes set Richard Amos.
