Bank drops reinsurance lawsuit

Marshall, who set up Bermuda-based reinsurer North American Fidelity and Guarantee in the summer of 1992 with capital of $100 million. The suit was filed at Bermuda Supreme Court on October 1, 1990, and dropped on November 22, 1993.

At the time of NAFG's formation, Mr. Marshall surprised many in the local insurance industry by saying all of the company's capital, comprising $65 million in cash and $35 million in contributed surplus, came from his own pocket.

Mr. Marshall was a former manager of Bermuda National Bank before it was bought by the Bank of Butterfield.

It is not known how much he was alleged to have owed BCB or why the action was brought and then discontinued. Also at Supreme Court recently: Sound Endeavours has brought an action against local Wang computer dealer North Atlantic Data Services, which recently went into receivership. Sound Endeavours is seeking $18,458.

An application has been filed to wind-up Shutters Ltd., the company formed in 1992 for the specific purpose of managing the Gosling's-owned Shutters Building on Burnaby Street, in Hamilton. Shutters Restaurant, which occupied the building, closed down this summer with extensive debts after being in business for less than a year.

Real estate firm John W. Swan Ltd. has won $46,992 against Austin Wade in a judgment delivered on November 17. Representing John. W. Swan Ltd. was the law firm of Lord, Simmons & Warner.

Painting company Smith & Sergeant Ltd. has won $22,956 against Security and Communication Systems Bermuda in a judgment delivered on November 22.
