Martial artist Allen inducted into Hall of Fame

newly-established Sanuces Ryu-Mushaba Force International Martial Arts Hall of Fame in California on the weekend.

The event took place at a star-studded $100-a-plate black tie banquet at the Los Angeles Marriott Hotel.

Among other inductees were movie stars Wesley Snipes and Chuck Norris, although neither attended, as well as Dr. Moses Powell and regular Bermuda visitor Billie Banks.

Another Bermudian, McLaren Smith, who is associated with Allen's dojo in Bermuda, was also on hand to receive an award as an honoree while Bermudians James Burch and Marvin Hassan were among the 400 guests who attended.

Allen, who runs his own dojo at the Dellwood School, is one of the chief Jiu Jitsu instructora in Bermuda and the Caribbean. He has been involved in the martial arts for 27 years and has been an instructor for the past 15 years.

Last year he was promoted to a Senior Master.

Saturday's highest award, the `Living Legend', went to Dr. Powell in recognition of his many years' "dedication to and enhancement of the martial arts both in the United States and throughout the world.'' Allen was presented with a crystal plaque, a silver Life Time Achievement award and a Certificate of Induction.

Other honorees included Omar Goodin and his brother, Cuba Goodin Jr. They were not admitted to the Hall of Fame but were recognised for their contribution to the martial arts.

The International Martial Arts Council is headed by Dr. Powell along with Professor Kaffi Roberts and Grand Master Mohammed Shabazz, organiser and emcee of the weekend activities.
