Title firsts for McHarg and Towlson

Several juniors were crowned age group champions when the rain-affected Cromwell Manders tournament finally reached its conclusion on Saturday.

Taylor McHarg won her first tournament title, defeating Christina Joynes 8-4 to take the girls? 10 and under crown while Neal Towlson was another first-time winner as he upset top seed Jack Keyes to win the boys? 14 and under division.

The two youngsters split sets before Towlson edged the tie-break 7-5.

Matteo Frazzoni also provided another Island first, taking home two tournament wins.

Although he had had competed in Florida and seen success overseas, he had yet to prove himself on the Bermuda circuit.

But he changed that by beating Keyes 6-2, 6-2 to lift the 16 and under crown and then won the boys? 18 and under round robin event without dropping a set.

In the girls? 16 and under and 18 and under events, Cayla Cross proved too strong for her opponents, taking both titles.

Carolita Joseph was resigned to the runner-spot in both divisions.

Ciara Svensen, meanwhile, had to fight all the way to take the 14 and under title with a 6-4, 0-6 (7-5) win over Courtney Fisher.

Svensen then turned around to meet Tyler Smith in the girls? 12 and under final with Smith coming away a 6-3, 6-4 victor.

The boys? 12 and under event saw Andrew Forgesson defeat Christopher Rego, winning the first set 7-6 on a tiebreaker and securing the second set 6-3.
