Western Stars 100-4

Perhaps still smarting from their defeat in last Sunday's Camel Cup final, Western Stars exacted a rough revenge at home against Somerset yesterday as the Premier League competition continued.

Visiting from the west, Somerset could hardly have enjoyed this trip to town. They were skittled out for a meagre 99 in 40.1 overs at St. John's Field only to see their bowling brutalised by Stars who romped to 100 for four in just 17.3 overs.

Opener Jermaine Postlethwaite led Stars' pillage with a brisk 53 off 51 balls (six fours and two sixes) and was fittingly at the wicket with his captain, Albert Steede, when the mission was accomplished.

Treadwell Gibbons Jr, who also opened, made 26 (four fours and a six) before being caught behind.

"The wicket was playing true. It was a fairly good track and, once I got over the new ball, things started to flow," said 31-year-old Postlethwaite, adding it was "nice" to get an unbeaten knock as he has given his hand away many times this season.

The city team got off to a flying start, scoring 41 runs off the first five overs and moving to 68 by ten overs and 91 at the 15-over mark.

Only Somerset's skipper, Shaun Roberts, stood out with the ball, snapping up two wickets in his lone over for two runs. Jacobi Robinson and Wendell White took one each.

Earlier, veteran Arnold Manders and the wily Dwayne Leverock had Somerset's batsmen in trouble with the former taking three for 19 off 10 overs while Leverock took two for two in six overs. Hasan Durham also picked up two wickets for 10 runs from 5.1 overs while Justin Robinson and Wilbur Burt chipped in with one apiece.

Somerset, at one stage 57 for two, lost their last eight wickets for 41 runs, with White posting a top score of 22 and Tony Cheeseman's 20 being the second highest.

St. George's 159

St. David's 160

St. David's coasted to a five-wicket triumph over rivals St. George's at Lord's yesterday with Del Hollis, skipper Clay Smith and Mackie Crane combining to take seven wickets.

Hollis, who on Saturday also took three wickets in the Eastern Counties Cup, finished with three for 21 off 10 overs while skipper Smith with his troublesome off spinners had the impressive figures of two for five off just 1.5 overs.

Medium pace opening bowler Crane collected two for 30 off 10 overs.

Batting first, St. George's were once comfortably placed on 64 with just one wicket down but few of the remaining batsmen shared in any joy at the crease.

Veteran medium pace bowler Gary Brangman, batting at number eight, was top scorer with an unbeaten 39 while Mark Ray followed on 28 and Travis Smith 13.

St. George's suffered a setback when Charlie Marshall was struck on the jaw with the second ball he received from Lionel Cann and was taken to hospital where he received stitches before being released.

St. David's reached victory off 37.5 overs with Glenn Blakeney scoring 37, opener Phillip Pitcher 35 and Delywon Borden 33 not out.
