Bermudian joins AG's chambers

Mr. Melvin Leroy Douglas was called to the bar in the Supreme Court. New Zealander Miss Belinda Jane Harvey, who will be working with the law firm of Smith Barnard and Diel, was also admitted.

Mr. Douglas obtained his early education at the Berkeley Institute, and is a graduate of the Bermuda College. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in law from the University of Kent.

Mr. Douglas completed his studies in May of this year at Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago, and was called to that country's bar in October.

The 29-year-old lawyer was presented to the Supreme Court by Solicitor General Mr. Barrie Meade.

Mr. Douglas thanked his parents, Mrs. Janet Douglas and Mr. Leroy Douglas, for their years of support, and the staff of the Attorney General's Office, where he has been employed for the past three months.

Mr. Douglas plans to work in litigation.

World-traveler Miss Belinda Jane Harvey decided to practice law in Bermuda after two visits with local friends. She has been employed with Smith Barnard and Diel for one year.

Miss Harvey received her law degree from the University of Auckland in 1986, and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand two years later.

She practised law in London, England for two years, dealing with civil litigation, probate, estate planning and matrimonial law.

Miss Harvey was also employed by the British Broadcasting Corporation for several months in 1989, working in a team of solicitors defending a large libel action.

She was presented to the Bermuda Bar by Mr. Coles R. Diel.

Miss Harvey thanked Mr. Diel, her colleagues at Smith Barnard and Diel, and her family for their help and support.
