Islanders blast Bay attack
Bailey's Bay 224
St. David's 225-2
St. David's did not behave like nice guests yesterday when they crushed Bailey's Bay by eight wickets in the latter's Sea Breeze backyard.
Pacing themselves well, the visitors romped to 225 for two in 45.1 overs in reply to the 224 all out which their hosts mustered off 48 overs.
St. David's winning effort was built on the backs of solid top-order contributions from captain Glen Blakeney, his opening partner Sammy Robinson, Wendell Smith, Delyone Borden and Clay Smith. In fact, Clay Smith who scored an unbeaten 44 and Borden, not out on 28, shared an unbroken stand after Wendell Smith retired hurt on 38.
Blakeney and Robinson started the victory charge with a 62-run, first-wicket stand before the St. David's skipper was caught behind for 42 off his opposite number Corey Hill. Robinson then combined with Wendell Smith for another valuable partnership of 69 before becoming the second and final wicket Bailey's Bay would capture - his stumps were shattered by Dennis Pilgrim with St. David's on 131 and his own score 37.
Each of the seven bowlers used by Bailey's Bay were punished with Jermaine Outerbridge faring the worst, giving up 51 runs in seven overs and not a scalp to his name. Hill and Pilgrim - the only bowlers from the home side to enjoy any success - took one for 47 off 10 overs and one for 35 off 10 overs respectively.
Taking first knock, Bailey's Bay's batsmen all struggled with the exception of Deverey Hollis who held the innings together with a sterling 86. Coming in at the fall of the first wicket with just 15 runs on the board, he survived amid his team-mates' steady demise. He and captain Hill shared the team's highest partnership of 46 before the latter was caught by George O'Brien off Del Hollis for 24. Bay's score was then 115 for four.
Deverey Hollis was eventually Bay's last man out, bowled by Loren Marshall, as his team's innings folded with two overs left. Extras were the second highest scorer, contributing 38. Rudell Pitcher, Del Hollis, Borden and Marshall each took two wickets for St. David's.
