WTO gathering in London for talks

GENEVA (AP) — Top trade negotiators from the United States, the European Union, Brazil and India will meet in London and Geneva this weekend to discuss long-struggling World Trade Organization efforts to liberalise global commerce.“It will be just bilaterals,” said Clodoaldo Hugueney, Brazil’s ambassador to the WTO, who will accompany Foreign Minister Celso Amorim in the talks. US trade representative Susan Schwab, EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson and India’s trade minister Kamal Nath are also expected at the meetings.

The so-called Doha round of trade talks has stumbled since its inception five years ago in Qatar’s capital, as rich and poor countries have wrangled over eliminating trade barriers in goods and agriculture.

Sniping between the US and the 27-nation EU has also stalled progress.

European and US officials confirmed the bilateral meetings, but said no sessions were currently planned bringing together all four ministers — representing the countries largely seen as the main power brokers within the 150-member WTO.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity as the meetings had yet to be officially announced, said the talks from Saturday to Monday would focus on moving the process along and were not aimed at a breakthrough.

The failure of the US, EU, Brazil and India to reach an agreement during negotiations in July led to the suspension of the Doha talks.
