Auditor General pays tribute to predecessor Larry Dennis

Doing the right thing: former Auditor-General Larry Dennis

The Auditor General has paid tribute to a predecessor who held the position for more than 30 years.

Heather Thomas spoke out following the recent death of Larry Dennis.

Ms Thomas described her predecessor as “indefatigable”, adding: “Larry Dennis was Bermuda’s first appointed and longest serving Auditor General of Bermuda, having served for 31 years, from August 7, 1978, to August 31, 2009.

“Larry never attempted to sugar coat the facts. His last ten years in the office had been the most challenging of his professional career, having dealt with some issues that should not have been necessary.

“However, despite the challenges, he persevered and strived to do what was right for the country, and always up held the independence of the office, while pushing for improvements in transparency and public accountability.

“He was steadfast in his beliefs and reported without fear or favour.

“I would be remiss not to mention his sense of humour. He loved a good joke and the Office was entertained with his quick wit.

“He will be remembered fondly and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Nancy and his daughter, Shallan.”
