Conditional discharge for woman caught stealing
Stealing spring rolls, chicken and a frozen entree landed a 23-year-old woman in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Donyelle Burchall pleaded guilty to stealing almost $40 of goods from the Shopping Centre branch of the MarketPlace at 7 p.m. on January 23.
Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that Burchall was an employee of the store when the manager on duty, Houston Bush, watched her place a brown bag of goods on the chair of cash register number seven.
He noticed a little later that she moved the bag so it was under cash register number six, purchased some items and placed those in the bag with the other goods.
When Burchall attempted to leave the premises with the brown bag, Mr. Bush approached her and questioned her about the contents. Burchall was able to produce the receipt for the items Mr. Bush saw her purchase, however she was unable to prove purchasing the spring rolls, chicken and the frozen entree worth a total of $36.09.
Mr. Bush called the Police who arrested Burchall.
Burchall said: “I was basically hard up on cash and was hungry and I am sorry for what I’ve done.’
Burchall was attending Bermuda College, but could not return because of a lack of funds so she worked part-time at the MarketPlace while looking for a second job.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: “There is dignity in labour, all labour, but you’ve got to do the best for yourself and I do not think a conviction will do that.” Mr. Warner sentenced her to a conditional discharge for 12 months on the condition that she pursues all avenues for retraining and employment offered by the National Training Board.
