Tops among tag day sellers
tag day queen.
She's arguably been selling tags for charities longer than anyone else on the Island -- for 30 years at least.
Every tag day she is a familiar sight, helping some good cause or other.
Today -- the Committee of 25's tag day -- will be no exception when she positions herself at the MarketPlace in Somerset.
Yesterday the Southampton pensioner told The Royal Gazette how she had been gripped by the tagging bug.
"I get to meet all kinds of people from different walks of life. I also have the chance to see old friends I haven't seen in a while.'' And the most important reason for selling tags? "I like to help people less fortunate than me.'' Mrs. Thomas has high praise for Bermudians, describing them as "lovely, generous people''.
And nothing has changed over the years, she says -- Bermudians are just as generous today as they were 30 years ago.
Charity work has played an important part in Mrs. Thomas' life for many years.
She was president of the Orchid Charity Club for three years in the early 1960s, for instance.
Not that her work just involves selling tags.
She also sells baskets for the blind on Front Street, and at Christmas visits old folk in rest homes, laden with presents.
And if that isn't enough, every Friday, she attends the Special People's Club, a meeting for senior citizens in the Cathedral Hall.
Mrs. Thomas is certainly living her life to the fullest. "Senior citizens have lots of fun these days. I'm having a wonderful time,'' she exclaimed.
As well as going on cruises and picnics, she enjoys a game of cards, and loves all kinds of sports, especially Cup Match.
Her philosophy on life can be summed up simply.
"I help people, maybe they'll help me one day,'' she says.
