Hung jury in attempted murder trial

A jury failed to reach a verdict this afternoon in the case of a man accused of an attempted murder outside a Sandys bar but convicted him of possessing ammunition. The jury found Marico Bassett guilty by unanimous verdict of possessing two live bullets found during the investigation into the shooting of Randolph Lightbourne. But despite nearly five hours of deliberations they could not reach a verdict on charges that he used a gun and attempted to murder Mr Lightbourne, 44.The shooting happened outside the Charing Cross Tavern on July 23 last year.Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney asked for a retrial on the shooting charges. Defence lawyer Marc Daniels objected, and Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves adjourned the case for a decision at a later date.Meanwhile he remanded Bassett into custody and a date will be fixed next month for his sentencing over the bullets he was convicted of possessing. They were found during a police search of an apartment belonging to a woman friend of Bassett’s that overlooked the Charing Cross Tavern.See tomorrow’s paper for more.
