Goater, Lightbourne still chasing first wins of season
Division, having failed to find the net in Walsall's Cola Cola Cup first round, first leg match against Brentford in midweek, which finished 2-2.
But the Bermudian striker isn't concerned about the slow start, knowing that his luck can quickly change with that first goal.
"I've just been average, it hasn't been anything special,'' admitted Lightbourne, the day after Walsall blew a 2-0 home lead to Brentford.
"It's been a slow start for me so far. I'll keep my head up, get that first goal and go from there.'' Walsall, rated by pundits as the best footballing side in the Third Division last season when they finished second behind champions Carlisle, have made a couple of new signings, left-back Ray Daniels from Portsmouth and Darren Bradley, a midfielder who joined them from West Brom.
However, the team has already been hit by injuries with fullback Colin Gibson recovering from an achilles operation, winger Scott Houghton on the mend from a hamstring pull and goalkeeper Trevor Wood and defender Charlie Palmer also yet to play their first matches of the season.
Today Walsall travel away for the first time when they make the 45-minute drive to Shrewsbury for a derby match. "We're looking to get something from that game at least, '' said Lightbourne.
"The pace is not as fast as in the Third Division. The two teams we've played against are more organised but overall it's not a real big difference.'' Shawn Goater's Rotherham also go into this weekend seeking their first win of the season. On Tuesday they also lost their Coca Cola first round, first leg tie, going down 4-1 away to Scunthorpe. Rotherham are at home to Hull today.
